Throughout the course of this week I have gained a lot of knowledge about marine ecosystems. The most interesting fact that I learned is that if you let a fish grow four times its size, it can lay sixty-four times as many eggs. I learned that ghost fishing is where abandoned fishing gear continues to catch fish, and that this is very dangerous for marine animals. I also learned about bycatching, which is where species of animals are accidentally caught, then thrown overboard. Those animals are often injured or dead. Additionally, I learned about poison fishing, dynamite fishing, and bottom trawling. I also learned that an excess amount of nutrients from surface runoff have a very negative effect on ecosystems. Finally, I learned a little bit about the benefits of marine reserves or marine protected areas.
I finished my project proposal on Wednesday morning. I changed who the audience of my project is; the audience is going to be scuba divers. I researched empathy interviews in order to gain an idea of what types of questions to ask. I have made fairly good progress on my research about the causes of destruction and the efforts of conservation. I finished researching the basics of destructive fishing techniques. I started researching the destruction due to development and some of the efforts to conserve the habitats.
Everything has been running smoothly for this project since my last blog post. Information has been readily available for my research. My underwater filming gear will arrive today, so I will be able to test it out long before the actual filming. I am struggling a bit with coming up with interview questions, but other than that there have been no very big challenges.
As I stated earlier, my filming gear is almost here, so I plan to test it this weekend. I will also look into filming techniques. I will finish my interview questions, and contact the dive shop to see if they would be willing to participate in interviews. I plan to continue my research through next week.
