Why Animas High School?
Out of the three high schools in Durango, Big Picture, Durango High, and Animas, I chose Animas High School for a few reasons. One reason I chose Animas was for the smaller, friendly school environment. For example, teachers and students know each other, and students are comfortable talking to them about grades or other issues. Another example is students know each other and often befriend students from other grades. Another reason I chose Animas was for the hands-on learning that shows students that what they are learning is relevant in the real world and makes them care about their education; students aren’t just handed a text book and expected to memorized it. At Animas students learn valuable skills like Spanish, Adobe Photoshop, and how to advocate for ourselves. Additionally, Animas High School pushes students, but at the same time supports them; anything below a C is failing. Students have a say in their education, if we have a hard time on a project we can stay after school at discus the difficulties with teachers. My older brother, Philip Wiley, has gone here since his freshman year and has enjoyed and succeeded here at Animas. At Animas High students are encouraged to be themselves.
